PROAID Australia
  • Australia's nonprofit and charity sector is a dynamic and essential part of the country's economy and social fabric. Based on insights from the Australian Charities Report 11th Edition, here are the unique aspects of Australia's charity sector, along with the resources allocated to them:

1 - Size and Diversity of the Sector

Number of Charities: Australia is home to over 60,000 registered charities across diverse sectors, including human services, education, health, religion, and community development.

    Revenue Distribution:

    • Charities in Australia generate over $200 billion in revenue annually. This revenue is primarily sourced from government grants, donations, and bequests.

    • Extra-large charities, which comprise a small portion (around 0.5% of all registered charities), account for a significant share of this revenue (56%)

    • Smaller charities, particularly those with annual revenues under $500,000, make up around 60.2% of the sector but contribute a much smaller proportion to the total revenue.

    2 - Key Funding Sources

    • Government Funding: Government grants represent the largest source of revenue for Australian charities, constituting 48.4% of total charity income. This is particularly significant for larger organizations that handle substantial projects and government-funded programs.

    • Donations and Bequests: Donations and bequests make up around 8.5% of total charity revenue, which is crucial for small to medium-sized charities.

    • Goods and Services: Charities also generate revenue from providing goods or services, which accounts for 33.3% of total income.

3 - Geographic Distribution and Service Areas

    • Concentration in Major States: The majority of Australia’s charities are located in New South Wales (31%), Victoria (22.9%), and Queensland (15.5%). These states house a large portion of the sector, with most charities concentrated in metropolitan areas.

    • Regional Distribution: While the bulk of charities operate in major cities, there is also a presence in regional and rural areas, where charities focus on community services, health, and education.

4 - Charity Size and Impact

Charity Sizes: Australia’s charity sector is characterized by a wide range of charity sizes:

    • Extra small charities (with revenue less than $50,000) represent 30.3% of charities but contribute just 0.1% of the total revenue.

    • Medium to large charities (with annual revenue between $500,000 and $10 million) make up 29.9% of the sector and are key drivers of revenue and operational scale.

    • Extra large charities (revenue over $100 million) are fewer in number but dominate in terms of financial resources and sector influence.

    5 - Charitable Activities

Sector Activities: The most common activities for charities in Australia include:

    • Religion and faith-based spirituality (20.3% of activities)

    • Human services (15.7%), which focus on health, welfare, and social services.

    • Education (15.1%) and community development are also significant areas of focus.

International Operations: Around 6% of Australian charities operate outside of Australia, with India, Cambodia, Indonesia, the Philippines, and Kenya being the most common countries of operation.

    6 - Charity Sector Challenges

Rising Expenses: Many charities are facing financial challenges, with operating costs, particularly for staff salaries, increasing. Charities in Australia have reported a 12.6% rise in overall expenses due to inflation and rising costs of living.

Volunteer vs. Paid Staff: Smaller charities rely heavily on volunteers, while larger charities have more paid staff. This reliance on volunteer support may create challenges in sustainability and scaling operations.

    7 - Growth and Potential

Sector Growth: Despite challenges, the Australian charity sector continues to grow, with both revenue and employee numbers rising steadily. Charities have an increasing role in addressing societal needs, particularly in welfare and education, and are seeing a shift towards more professionalized management.
